I was in Language Arts flipping through a textbook when I found this poem and decided to make a video out of it. The words struck me with great familiarity. From the first sentence, I knew what the message was.
If looking good, and being popular, means being unable to express yourself freely, than I choose to be an ugly weed.
Let them be as flowers,
always watered, fed, guarded, admired,
but harnessed to a pot of dirt.
I’d rather be a tall, ugly weed,
clinging on cliffs, like an eagle
wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.
To have broken through the surface of stone,
to live, to feel exposed to the madness
of the vast, eternal sky.
To be swayed by the breezes of an ancient sea,
carrying my soul, my seed,
beyond the mountains of time or into the abyss of the bizarre.
I’d rather be unseen, and if
then shunned by everyone,
than to be a pleasant-smelling flower,
growing in clusters in the fertile valley,
where they’re praised, handled, and plucked
by greedy, human hands.
I’d rather smell of musty, green stench
than of sweet, fragrant lilac.
If I could stand alone, strong and free,
I’d rather be a tall, ugly weed.
Would you rather be someone who is faddish yet unable to change, or someone who is detested yet able to be unique and free?

I think being yourself and being hated would never happen. Anyone who is true to himself and others will always have friends.
There will always be someone who will like the person you are whether it’s a guy or girl, boyfriend/girlfriend, or just best friends!
Wow!!! Lovely
Great Poem.
I like that you chose a poem that is very deep and touching with great word choice. I love this post. Good job with the video. You put a lot of effort into it, because you had music, and a picture for every line of the poem. That’s a lot of lines.
Thank you!
Thanks!
awesome poem
Nice poem ~
Do you make exceptions for your blogroll? ;]
This is awesome.
Gracias!
Hey Ilan! Cool poem! The LA textbooks sometimes have interesting things, don’t they?
Yes, they do! By the way, this post wasn’t by Ilan. You may want to check the author beforehand.
Oh, that’s why you were saying thanks randomly xD
Tip; put your name in the post =]
i read that poem in english last yr- the meaning it very true
but for me its meaning is beauty or strength. like everyone gets ugly when their old but strength and determination lasts basically forever
i read that weed thing out loud and mason says stop trying to act so wise. take care of your hair.
OMG I READ THIS LAST YEAR IN ENGLISH!
